Apache: The New Hummer

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

So here’s the deal, I don’t usually write strictly opinion pieces that have no tech/web relation, but this one just had to be written.

Old and busted

Pink Hummer

New and improved
Apache Helicopter

If you have the money to buy a retrofitted war machine, why not actually buy one that is AWESOME. Sure it only seats 2, there are no cargo holds to speak of, and it might be slightly illegal to fly them around, but still…

If I was going to get a hummer I’d get one with a gun turret still mounted. Failing that, I see no reason to purchase one.

I mean look at this!

Apache Missiles

That’s f-ing crazy!

What a great line it would make! “Do you want a ride home? I can have my Apache pick us up…”

Think Plaid?

Plaid

We just got a visit from the Plaid folks at our office. They seem to be doing some interesting stuff. They are a branding firm that walks the walk:

Plaid Summer Tour - BrandAid 2007. The first ever road trip by a design and branding firm. Watch agency employees embark on a 2450 mile trip visiting clients, potential clients, and interesting things along the way in their custom Plaid tour van.

The entire tour will be documented on video and various social media tools, including blogs, Twitter, Flickr, live webcam, and of course YouTube.

Props to these guys, and for getting photos of me. As we all know, the camera loves me.

Byteshark: Object Search Engine

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

This morning I noticed a couple of hits on my blog coming from Byteshark, having never heard of this site, I decided to jump on.

Byteshark Home

ByteShark OSE is our Patent Pending Object Search Engine (OSE) technology that is used to locate identical and similar objects across the Internet based on the objects’ digital signature NOT its surrounding text. Surrounding text is what all other search engines use including Google, Yahoo, etc.

It’s an interesting concept, but still a little rough.

Garfield Redux
I used this picture expecting more Garfield cartoons, but came up with this:

Byteshark Results

It’s an interesting concept, search for things by their signature, I’m just not too sure how Garfield’s signature is like a lamp.

Bored? Play Surfer Side Up, It Might Take A While

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

So the new Fantastic 4 movie is coming out and blah blah blah. Well, I figured I’d check out this new promotion they are having, advertising and such.

I read in Underwire about how as a promotion for the FF4 movie, Twentieth Century Fox and the Franklin Mint will be releasing Silver Surfer stamped coins commemorating Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and sending people to their new site.

Silver Surfer Promo Coins

What I thought was cool was the “flip the coin” game you could play on the site. It was fun for a second, but it was over only too quickly. The problem was you could only play once a day. Ok, I though, how many days would I have to play in order to actually win something?

Silver Side Up

Well, rather than trying again tomorrow, I did a bit of digging, i.e. snooping, and after a bit of playing around with the flash, I found that the game values are actually generated prior to the start of the game. Turns out the game is decided ahead of time :-p, big whoop, huh? I mean with things like this you know for sure you are going to lose.

But what are the odds? Well, rather than coding up something (I didn’t have the time), I’ll just leave it at this. The odds of winning the game are worse than 1 in 365. Meaning? Oh, you could play it once a day until May 22, 2008 and not even come close to winning anything. Naturally, the chance of getting 2 Heads in 3 tosses is 1 in 2.

So much for luck of the toss.

Wordpress 2.2 Released!

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

This blog is now using Wordpress 2.2.

Upgrades are suggested, just make sure you backup your site’s theme and your database!

Upgrade for 2.2:

  • WordPress Widgets allow you to easily rearrange and customize areas of your weblog (usually sidebars) with drag-and-drop simplicity. This functionality was originally available as a plugin Widgets are now included by default in the core code, significantly cleaned up, and enabled for the default themes.
  • Full Atom support, including updating our Atom feeds to use the 1.0 standard spec and including an implementation of the Atom Publishing API to complement our XML-RPC interface.
  • A new Blogger importer that is able to handle the latest version of Google’s Blogger product and seamlessly import posts and comments without any user interaction beyond entering your login.
  • Infinite comment stream, meaning that on your Edit Comments page when you delete or spam a comment using the AJAX links under each comment it will bring in another comment in the background so you always have 20 items on the page. (I know it sounds geeky, but try it!)
  • We now protect you from activating a plugin or editing a file that will break your blog.
  • Core plugin and filter speed optimizations should make everything feel a bit more snappy and lighter on your server.
  • We’ve added a hook for WYSIWYG support in a future version of Safari.

Consumer Regurgitated Content: Op-ed Song and Dance

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

A cool concept found via an email from Kevin:

Boston.com is proud to present “Pop-Ed,” a daily original song and accompanying video written and performed by local musician Jake Brennan, focusing on news and events that take place that day.

It’s a cool idea, write one song a day, about the events of the day. Apparently you can even submit your own lyrics to have them included in a song or you can submit your own video too.

405 Sugar Creek Lane

Here’s a new look at having a home online:

405 Sugar Creek Lane.com. Also see the listing on Zillow.

That’s the house where that I spend the better part of my teenage years in Greenville, South Carolina. We decided to try something new and put up a flash site (designed by my brother’s firm, Tensegrity Systems) to help us sell it.

Pretty slick, huh? You can even see a photo album of the place.

Writing this post also reminded me of what someone else did online trying to sell his house:
